Modular Household Aquaponics for Low-Income Families
Global food production increasingly contributes to environmental and economic strain as the world population increases. The researchers are trying to design and optimize a low-cost, indoor, aquaponics system (this incorporates fish and vegetables grown by hydroponics) targeted to low-income families. The proposed system adapts a design already developed and built by Professor Macia featuring a fish station that generates and distributes nutrient-rich water to vegetable trays in a cyclical purification process. Future work includes the design and construction of three vegetable trays, and a synchronized gravity-flow system that circulates nutrient-rich water between trays.
