Energy Optimization and Scalability for a Millimeter-Wave Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can be used to enhance signal reception in wireless communications without consuming power from the grid. Future wireless communication systems will leverage millimeter waves (>30 GHz), sacrificing obstacle penetration for speed. RISs are large arrays of elements that can be controlled to create either a 0 or 180 degree reflected phase shift. Specific patterns of phase shift can be used to reflect signals around obstacles and toward a cell user, mitigating penetration issues; effectiveness increases with array size. The research team designed a motherboard to facilitate scaling and will evaluate the power consumption of the RIS.
