Hydrolysis of Biomass Derived Cellulose and Hemicellulose with Engineered Bacillus Subtilis Strains
Due to the impending energy crisis that the world is slowly approaching and the push for clean energy, biofuels are in greater demand than ever before. Although biofuels derived from cellulose and hemicellulose are currently used in industry, the processes used to extract these fuels are outdated, inefficient, and costly. To mitigate these issues, this project is focused on the engineering of a bacterium to secrete enzymes for the direct hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicellulose. By streamlining this process, the cost of production will be cut as well as make biofuels a more prominent source of energy for future generations.
