Studying the Stress Strain Properties of Auxetic Structures

Security icon, disabled. A blue padlock, locked.

In the past few decades, a new kind of structure made out of certain patterns was discovered that was porous and presented a negative Poisson’s ratio. Because of this unique property, these Auxetic patterns have the potential to be stronger than their patternless counterparts while using less material, an important aspect in aerospace applications. During this project, different patterns were 3D printed and subjected to compression using a universal testing machine to obtain their stress-strain graphs. Comparison between their Poisson’s ratio and stress-strain graphs will determine if a more negative Poisson’s ratio determines a stronger metamaterial.
