Mixed Reality Hardware for Hands On Virtual Science Labs

Education icon, disabled. A purple mortarboard.

Virtual reality and its integration into online education could make online lab courses better reflect an in person lab experience. There is a great opportunity for virtual remote education especially since the recent COVID pandemic. This project aims to develop a second iteration of a mixed reality device, SWISH (Shifted-Weight Interface of Simulated Hydrodynamics) which simulates fluid movement in a virtual lab environment through haptic feedback. For this project, software was developed in Unity for testing the SWISH haptic system and virtual chemistry education labs were developed for the hardware. This work could be expanded to other disciplines as well.
