Robert Atkinson
Associate Professor, School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence
Dr. Robert Atkinson has over 25 years of experience in disciplines such as Computer Science, Informatics, Industrial Engineering, Educational Technology, and Educational Psychology. His extensive teaching background includes mentoring 25 PhD graduates across five programs at ASU (Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, Human Systems Engineering, Educational Technology, Educational Psychology), showcasing his interdisciplinary expertise. Dr. Atkinson has taught nearly 10,000 students, including over 5,000 in CSE475 - Introduction to Human-Computer Interaction. This course covers principles, theories, and methodologies in HCI, including user-centered design, interface development, cognitive aspects, usability testing, and accessibility.
As the founder and Director of the Innovative Learner and User Experience Lab (iLUX Lab) at Arizona State University, Dr. Atkinson led a team of researchers in studying user experience using state-of-the-art physiological sensors. The iLUX Lab's research focused on measuring and analyzing large sets of sensory data to understand user interactions with various digital and physical interfaces. By employing tools such as eye-tracking, EEG, and galvanic skin response sensors, the lab gained comprehensive insights into users' cognitive load, emotional states, and overall engagement. These insights were instrumental in designing intuitive and user-friendly interfaces, contributing significantly to advancements in educational technologies and interactive learning environments.
In addition, Dr. Atkinson founded and directed the Advancing Next Generation Learning Environments Lab (ANGLE Lab) at ASU, where he explored and developed innovative technologies to enhance interactive learning environments. The ANGLE Lab's research centered on leveraging emerging technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and intelligent tutoring systems to improve student learning outcomes. By creating and testing various interactive learning tools and environments, the lab identified best practices and effective strategies for integrating technology into educational settings. Collaborations with industry partners, including FedEx on AR projects, showcased the practical applications of their research and its impact on real-world learning scenarios.
Dr. Atkinson has also consulted with prominent brands, significantly enhancing their user experience and interface designs. At Adidas, he directed several UX/UI projects focused on in-store branding and digital retail experiences, providing data-driven recommendations to improve user journeys. At American Airlines, he played a key role in redesigning their website and self-service kiosks, enhancing customer satisfaction through improved user interface design. His work with M&M Mars and Crayola involved optimizing product placement and enhancing customer engagement based on user research. Additionally, at Pearson and Macmillan Publishing, he conducted biometric UX research to measure user engagement and cognitive load, informing the design of more effective learning materials.
