Jay Oswald
Associate Professor, School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy
Jay Oswald is an Associate Professor in the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy at Arizona State University. He received his B.S. (2004) and M.S. (2005) in Mechanical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and completed his Ph.D. at Northwestern University in 2011 under Professor Ted Belytschko. From 2005 to 2006, he worked at NASA Glenn Research Center, studying the mechanical and environmental behavior of docking seal materials for spaceflight applications.
Dr. Oswald’s research focuses on the computational modeling of materials and manufacturing processes, especially failure mechanisms such as fracture and plasticity. His group integrates physics-based simulation with data-driven methods to support industry-sponsored projects in areas like laser welding, materials processing, and quality inspection. Recent efforts include developing intelligent systems for defect detection and geometry-based strategies for part handling and fixturing in automated manufacturing environments.
Students in Dr. Oswald’s lab gain experience at the intersection of simulation, machine learning, and real-world manufacturing challenges—often working directly with industry partners to translate research into practice.
