Hamed Khodadaditirkolaei
Assistant Professor, School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment
Dr. Hamed Khodadadi Tirkolaei is an Assistant Professor in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE) at Arizona State University (ASU). He received his PhD in geotechnical engineering with a focus on biogeotechnics from Eastern Mediterranean University in Cyprus. He also completed his research fellowship at the Institute for Foundation Engineering, Soil and Rock Mechanics at Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, and conducted post-doctoral research at the NSF Engineering Research Center for Bio-mediated and Bio-inspired Geotechnics (CBBG) at ASU. Dr. Tirkolaei is a senior investigator at CBBG and leads the Geosystems Engineering for Global Impacts Laboratory (GEGIL), which focuses on developing innovative, nature-inspired, and eco-friendly solutions to address emerging global challenges through a geotechnical perspective. His research group is actively engaged in pioneering biocementation and biomineralization techniques, exploring biopolymers for soil stabilization, and developing methods to upcycle waste plastics into foundation systems.
Dr. Tirkolaei’s research is supported by multiple funding agencies and industries, including the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and various mining companies. He has published over 45 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers. Additionally, Dr. Tirkolaei serves on the editorial board of Biogeotechnics, reviews manuscripts for several high-impact journals, and contributes to Geo-Congresses. He also chairs the Awards Subcommittee of the Sustainability in Geotechnical Engineering Committee within ASCE's Geo-Institute.
